Wow the first day of June started with the DOW up over 100 points, only to close down over 100 points at the day. On June 2nd, the market steadily rose throughout the day to close at session highs, over 220 points. June 3rd, marked another seesaw day as the market jumped early in the session to 10,300, only to fall to a session low of 10,179 before steadily rising up to close above 10,255. The Market began moving higher late Thursday as news of a strong jobs reports were expected on Friday morning.
On Friday there were three major negative factors that hit the market and dictated the day’s trading activity.

Things started out overseas when Hungary announced that it’s economy is in a crisis. This brought out concerns that Europe could be headed into a deeper economic crisis.

The Euro dropped to new year of 1.1955 against the dollar.

Jobs market data disappointed. The report showed 430,000 jobs were created in May, well short of 513,000 that Economists polled by Thomas Reuters had expected. And of the 430,000 jobs created, 411,000 were temporary census workers.

When the market opened on Friday, it quickly gaped down and steadily rose for the first hour of trading. As traders began to absorb the data, the market sell off began to accelerate throughout the day. The Dow closed at 9,931 (down 323 points), the lowest point since Feb 8th, 2010.

On a positive note, the S&P was able to gain support at 1064. The S&P continues to trade within the trading range of 1105 - 1060. Any move above 1105 is bullish and bearish if we break the 1060 range. For active traders, it’s important to keep a close watch on the ranges.

At this time due to the poor jobs report, we are bearish on the retail stocks. We are bullish on airline stocks as the group continues to hit new 52 week highs on a weekly basis. Some stocks to keep an eye on are:

ALK - Alaska Airline

CRM - Salesforce.com

UNG - Natural Gas Fund

VMW - VM Ware

Look to pick up some shares on any major pullbacks on the above stocks, they are poised to outperform the market if and when we recover from the current slump.

Okay so I’m thinking that this market is looking very very grim right now. I’ve been on the sell side for the last week and as bad as things have been going, I’m still bearish on the overall market. On Wednesday my big short was AAPL, getting in at 212.4 and covering today at 195. There’s still downside room but I’m happy with the two day trade and have decided to move onto AMZN as a short. So I shorted AMZN at 130 this am, I look to cover around 120 or so early next week. I think it’s a safe bet to carry this over the weekend.

On the long side, I’m still holding on to SIRI and CTIC. SIRI has spiked up from my original purchase of .60 cents a few days ago. CTIC isn’t doing too much yet. <!--

Investors are getting extremely cautious as the stock market has not looked great the past two weeks. The Nasdaq, Dow and S&P 500 have all declined during the last two weeks of trading. This recent stock market dip the last couple of weeks is actually welcomed news as the market was way over heated and needed to pullback a little to build up momentum for the next leg up.

The next few weeks is going to be a true test as earnings are scheduled to be released. We should see some positive reports as the second quarter of 2009 improved vastly from the previous quarters.

In addition to the earnings reports scheduled in the coming weeks, investors continue to eye the jobs report. Even though job losses are slowing down, the market would like to see some gains in jobs in the coming quarters.

If you have money in the stock market, keep a close eye on earnings report and the jobs number in the coming weeks. These two events should shape the way the stock market performs.

As the US government supported ‘clunkers’ program came to an end, encouraging signs are emerging for troubled US carmaker Ford Motor Company.

Till some days back, the company was high above in the list of top-10 stocks, one should never buy. But now with the US government’s relief program it seems that the situation is changing for the Detroit company.

Amidst economic meltdown, Ford was the only carmaker in US that steered itself of bankruptcy and emergency federal funding.

And it was the ‘$1 billion clunker’s’ program with which the company made a turnaround. According to this program, existing Ford customers will get an incentive if they want to exchange their monstrous gas guzzlers with brand new fuel-efficient cars.

Recent figures have shown that due to this program, Ford’s sales rose by 17 percent last month. The increase in sales was the second consecutive in two months, Ford said in a statement Tuesday.

The carmaker revealed that there was also an increase in its F-Series pickup trucks. It happened for the first time since October 2006, and signs are encouraging that the US economic is in its recovery stage.

Ford said that it had sales of all its brands increased to 182,149 in August, as compared to 155,690 vehicles last year. Due to the ‘clunkers’ program, Ford’s July sale rose by 2.3 percent.

Sales of Ford Motor’s premium brands like Ford, Mercury and Lincoln increased by 16.8 percent to 176,323 units. The carmaker said that there was also an increase in the sales of Volvo, which saw a hike of 24.8 percent to 5,826 vehicles.

The company said that it is witnessing a steady decline in sales of SUV, which slumped t0 33.7 percent while sales of trucks and vans increased to 12.2 percent.

From Ford’s stable, the biggest hit has been its Focus compact cars. A record 25,547 Focus cars were sold in August and the figures were 56 percent higher than last year’s figures. The Focus was also the highest selling car in the ‘clunkers’ program and customers are moving to more energy efficient cars.

Ford strongly feels that the numbers would improve by the end of the 2009 and feels that nearly 12.5 million cars would be sold next year as consumers will get to buy more since the pressure on spending is likely to get eased.

Despite the increase in sales, Ford’s stocks dipped to $7.40. But with the sales expected to become stronger the stocks are also going to improve. This makes Ford a good selection for our Hot Stocks to Buy portfolio.

With investors feeling a little uneasy with the financial market it is hard to believe that Wells Fargo would be a hot stock to invest in, but it is because in June of 2009 the actual EPS is recorded at 0.23 higher than analysts at Yahoo Finance estimated. The same analysts also project next year’s quarter growth to be 131.6% and next year’s growth to 122.7%. Since March of 2009 there is an upward trend from $8.12 a share to the current price. On July 22, 2009 WFC reported revenue of $22.5 billion, up 28% (annualized) from first quarter. Wells Fargo net income of $3.17 billion was also up 81% from last year. WFC also reported net income applicable to common stock of $2.58 billion, up 47% from last year.

Since combining assets with Wachovia Insurance Services on July 1, 2009, Wells Fargo becomes the world’s fourth largest insurance firm and the largest bank-owned insurance brokerage in the U. S.

In addition to the positive growth trend, on August 5, 2009 Wells Capital Management has been selected by Nomura Asset Management to manage the new Emerging Markets Consumer Stock Fund. The fund was launched in Japan on July 24 and total assets exceed $1 billion, with strong subscriptions adding to the initial launch size of $740 million. The fund is distributed in Japan by Nomura Securities.<!--

Just fresh from Monday’s 6.5% drop, stocks in Shanghai ended the day down 4.3%. Since it’s market peak just two weeks ago, China’s stock market has fallen over 20%. This could be the signal for a Bear market for the Hang Seng. Most of the European markets are down close to 1% in early morning trading.

After the market closed on Tuesday Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) reported a 19% drop in their quarterly report. The drop was mainly due to weak PC and ink sales.

This looks to be a dreadful opening for the US stock market. Investors should have their stops ready and prepare for a rough trading market. The rest of the week can be rough also as options are set to expire this Friday.<!--

Amazon has a product called Kindle, which has been featured on the Oprah Show that could be very profitable. A Cowen analyst Jim Friedland increased his expectations for sales of the Amazon (AMZN) Kindle e-book reader. Friedland now expects Amazon to end 2009 with 1.5 million active Kindle units increasing revenue to $266 million, up 13% from their previous estimate of $235 million. For 2010, he increased his sales forecast by 11% to 1.8 million units. By the end of 2010, he expects 3 million Kindles to be in service. Within 5 years, he estimates, 17% of active Amazon customers will own Kindles which will account for 10% of Amazon’s North American sales, or $2.3 billion in GAAP revenues.

Yahoo Finance analyst predictis positive growth for next quarter as well as a 28.6% growth for next year. This in addition to the increased kindle purchases makes Amazon a hot stock to buy.<!--
